Membership in a college or university students' union is usually "automatic" upon payment of tuition fees. A typical student union fee per academic year runs in the $25 to $100 range depending on the institution, student body numbers, country and region. A portion of student union fees are often used to support staff and an office. Student elections are held annually to elect the union executive. One of the largest undergraduate student unions in Canada is the York Federation of Students, at York University in Ontario, with around 49,000 student members!
Student unions are non-profit organizations and often provide a wide range of services, for their members, their educational institution and the community at large. Student unions are also well known for their political involvement and activity.
Most student unions are charged by their student body to protect their interests and improve student life at the university, college, municipal, provincial and/or federal government levels. In Canada, student unions and associations are normally members of either the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations, or the Canadian Federation of Students, the two federal lobby groups representing all post-secondary students. The province of Quebec has some unique and special rules around student associations.
